A 32 year old woman suffered serious injuries in the assault and later died while receiving treatment at a hospital. The second victim was also injured but was reported to be in stable condition.

Police officers confronted the suspect at the scene and ordered her to drop the knives. Authorities said she did not comply with the instructions, prompting officers to open fire. The woman was killed in the shooting.

The incident caused concern in one of New York’s busiest public areas, where large numbers of visitors and commuters gather throughout the day. A video of the incident has also circulated online.

Authorities are continuing to examine what led to the attack. Officials said the suspect had a history of mental health problems, although the circumstances surrounding the assault remain under investigation.
