The aircraft went down near the village of Krasnoyarovo, shortly after taking off for the training mission. It crashed in an uninhabited area, according to the initial information released by authorities.
Seven crew members were reportedly on board. Six died in the accident, including two who succumbed to their injuries while being taken to hospital. Another crew member survived and was taken for emergency medical treatment.
The crash also triggered a major fire after the aircraft’s fuel tanks caught fire. Emergency teams were sent to the site as officials began dealing with the aftermath.
The Tu-95 is one of Russia’s long range strategic bombers and has been used by the country’s military for decades. The aircraft involved in the incident was carrying out a training exercise when the crash occurred.
Russian authorities have opened an investigation to establish what caused the aircraft to go down. Officials are expected to examine the flight, aircraft condition and other circumstances surrounding the accident as part of the inquiry.
