Amazon Cargo Plane Crashes at Miami Airport, Five Killed

A routine landing at Miami International Airport turned into a deadly accident on Sunday when an Amazon cargo plane ran off the runway and struck vehicles nearby.

The Boeing 767 was operating Prime Air Flight 7598 after flying in from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The crash happened at about 2 pm local time. The aircraft lost control during landing, moved beyond the runway and hit several vehicles before flames broke out.

Five people died in the incident, while another five suffered injuries. Three of the injured were reported to be in critical condition. Rescue workers were also faced with people trapped inside vehicles damaged in the crash.

The cockpit was another difficult area for the emergency teams. Authorities said the pilot and copilot were trapped inside the aircraft after the impact. In another rescue, a person found stuck beneath a vehicle was pulled out by the emergency crews.

Firefighters and other rescue personnel were quickly sent to the crash site. More than 60 fire vehicles were involved, along with nearly 200 personnel who took part in the operation.

Videos showing the crash site spread rapidly online. They showed the aircraft moving off the runway before colliding with vehicles, followed by flames and a large cloud of smoke around the area.

The accident forced the airport to temporarily halt operations. Some runways and taxiways were closed while crews dealt with the wreckage and continued rescue work.

What caused the plane to leave the runway is still unclear. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have opened investigations to determine what happened during the landing.

Amazon is also gathering information about the crash and is expected to assist authorities as they examine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
