Tecno has added a new model to its Pova lineup with the launch of the Pova 8 Pro 5G. The smartphone stands out immediately because of its unusual rear design, which combines a triangular camera module with a small display. Tecno calls this styling the Starship design, giving the phone a noticeably different appearance from most smartphones in its segment.
The rear display is one of the biggest talking points of the new phone. It uses a mini LED dot matrix panel, and users can customise what appears on it. The company has positioned the feature as more than just a design element, giving users another way to interact with the phone and personalise its appearance.
The front of the Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G features a 6.78 inch AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate and up to 4500 nits of peak brightness. Corning Gorilla Glass 7i is used for protection. The phone runs Android 16 with Tecno’s HiOS 16 interface and is promised two Android version updates along with three years of security updates.
Performance is handled by the MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Ultimate processor. The phone comes with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, giving users plenty of room for applications, games and media. Tecno has also included its P1 dedicated graphics chip, which is designed to improve gaming performance and support frame rates of up to 144fps in supported titles.
Gaming performance is further supported by a 5000 square millimetre vapour chamber cooling system. The setup is intended to keep temperatures under control during extended gaming sessions, something that could be useful for users who spend long periods playing demanding mobile games.
The camera system is led by a 50MP main sensor using the Sony LYTIA 700C. Optical image stabilisation is included to help reduce blur caused by hand movement while shooting photographs or recording video. The main camera is joined by an 8MP ultrawide camera, while a 13MP front camera handles selfies and video calls.
Battery capacity is another major highlight. The Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G packs a 6500mAh battery with support for 45W fast charging. The phone also supports bypass charging, which can be useful during gaming by reducing the need to charge the battery directly while the device is being used. It also offers 10W reverse wired charging for powering compatible accessories or another device.
Tecno has given the phone a broad selection of additional features. It includes an in display fingerprint sensor, infrared support, NFC, Dolby Atmos and Hi Res Audio. The smartphone also carries IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K protection ratings, suggesting that durability is another area where the company is putting considerable emphasis.
The company has listed the Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G on its official website with its specifications, but the launch price has not yet been revealed. Tecno has announced three colour options for the phone, including Tundra Green, Arc White and Graphite Black.
With its rear display, high refresh rate AMOLED screen, large battery and gaming focused hardware, the Tecno Pova 8 Pro 5G is taking a noticeably different approach in the crowded 5G smartphone market. The final price will be an important factor in determining how competitive the phone becomes once it reaches buyers.
