AI and Basic Maths: AI Use May Be Making Children Forget Basic Maths, Nvidia CEO Says
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said growing reliance on AI for homework could weaken basic maths skills, while also helping young people develop new abilities and think differently.
AI and Basic Maths: Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has raised concerns about the way children are using artificial intelligence, saying heavy dependence on AI could make them less comfortable with basic maths.
Speaking on a podcast, Huang was asked about the effect of AI on younger students. He said children are increasingly turning to AI to finish homework faster, which may reduce the need to work through problems on their own.
Huang, however, did not describe the change as entirely negative. In his view, younger people may lose familiarity with some simple tasks while gaining the ability to learn new skills and approach more difficult problems in different ways.
He also connected the discussion to his own experience. Huang recalled that even while leading one of the world’s largest technology companies, he had once forgotten his own home address.
His comments come as AI tools become increasingly common in education. Students can now use them to solve maths problems, explain lessons and complete assignments within seconds, raising fresh questions about how much of the learning process should be handled by technology.
Huang’s broader point was that forgetting some basic information does not necessarily mean a person is learning less. The more important question, he suggested, is whether students are using AI as a learning aid or allowing it to do the thinking for them.
