Apple’s Foldable iPhone Ultra Could Be US Exclusive at Launch

Apple may introduce its first foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 series this September, but buyers outside the US could have to wait several months. Reports suggest the company is preparing for a highly limited launch because of production and pricing challenges.

The reported device, widely referred to as the iPhone Ultra, is expected to represent Apple’s first major step into the foldable smartphone market. However, its initial availability could be far narrower than the company’s usual global rollout.

According to ChannelNews Australia, a Chinese component supplier has indicated that Apple could initially release the foldable iPhone only in the US. China is reportedly among the next markets being considered, while Australia may not receive the device until several months after its expected introduction.

Supply appears to be one of the biggest concerns. The supplier reportedly pointed to production limitations and pricing difficulties, while testing issues with some completed units may also be affecting Apple’s plans. Australian carriers and a major retailer have reportedly been told that the device may not be available locally when the iPhone 18 range arrives.

The possibility of a restricted launch is not entirely unexpected. Earlier leaks had already suggested that Apple could produce the foldable iPhone in relatively small numbers during its first phase, reflecting the complexity and cost involved in manufacturing the new design.

Apple has not confirmed the iPhone Ultra or its launch strategy, so the reported rollout should be treated cautiously. Still, a limited first release would allow the company to manage early production more closely while addressing any issues before expanding into additional markets.

The timing of Apple’s September event is also still unconfirmed. ChannelNews Australia reported September 8 as a possible date, while earlier comments from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman have also pointed toward an early September event. With the US Labor Day holiday falling on September 7 this year, September 9 has also emerged as another possible date.

If Apple does unveil the foldable iPhone this year, the first launch could therefore look very different from a typical iPhone release. For customers outside the US, patience may be required before the iPhone Ultra reaches local stores.
