Hyderabad Metro Phase 2: Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 Plans Underground Routes Near Airports

Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 will include underground routes near Hakimpet and Shamshabad airports, with special designs planned to avoid runway restrictions and protect airport operations.

Hyderabad Metro Phase 2: Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 is taking shape with several engineering solutions planned for areas where railway lines, national highways and airport infrastructure could make construction difficult.

One of the key proposals is to build an underground metro section near Hakimpet Airport. Around 1.65 kilometres of the JBS to Shamirpet corridor is planned below ground near the airport. Officials are considering a route along the highway tunnel proposed by HMDA to avoid restrictions around the runway.

A similar approach has been proposed near Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad. Around 1.6 kilometres of the Nagole to Shamshabad corridor is expected to run underground within the airport area. The plan is aimed at keeping metro construction away from sensitive airport operations.

The Shamshabad expansion is also expected to include Cargo and Airport stations, along with a proposed metro depot within the airport premises. Since the project involves airport land and operations, approvals from the Ministry of Civil Aviation will be important before the plans move ahead.

Airport related restrictions are also influencing the design of other metro sections. Around Begumpet Airport, height restrictions apply because of aircraft movement and the designated funnel zone. As a result, sections planned around Shamirpet and Medchal are being designed with lower structures.

Railway crossings are another major challenge for Phase 2. Metro routes will cross railway tracks at locations including Falaknuma, Aramghar, Shamshabad, Gundlapochampally, Lothkunta and Alwal. Officials have indicated that in-principle approval has been received from South Central Railway for several crossings, while approval is still required for the Suchitra section.

National highways will also require additional clearances. Metro construction along NH 65 and NH 44 will require right of way permissions from the central road authorities. These approvals are particularly relevant for the Madinaguda to Patancheru, Chintalakunta to Hayathnagar, Aramghar to Shamshabad and Bowenpally to Medchal routes.

Overall, Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 proposes seven corridors covering 122.9 kilometres with 86 stations. The estimated project cost is Rs 38,595 crore. Once fully operational, the expanded network is expected to handle around 12.42 lakh passengers every day.

The proposed funding structure includes Rs 6,666 crore from the Centre, Rs 11,933 crore from the Telangana government and Rs 19,996 crore through loans.

The expansion will cover 36.5 kilometres within GHMC limits, 24.9 kilometres in Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation and 41.3 kilometres in Cyberabad Municipal Corporation. Officials are also seeking timely right of way clearances from HMDA and the Cantonment Board.

If the required permissions are secured on schedule, the second phase could significantly strengthen Hyderabad’s public transport network and improve connectivity to key airport, residential and employment areas.
