Maharashtra Bans Loose Cooking Oil Sales Across The State

Maharashtra FDA has banned loose cooking oil sales, requiring sealed and labelled products to improve traceability, curb adulteration, and strengthen food safety checks across the state.

Loose cooking oil sales are now banned in Maharashtra.

Packaged cooking oil must carry clear details.

FDA will tighten checks across the oil supply chain.

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has taken a major step to tighten controls on cooking oil sales across the state. The new order prohibits the sale of edible oil in loose form and pushes businesses towards properly sealed and labelled products.

The decision comes amid concerns about adulteration, poor quality and the difficulty of tracing loose oil back to its source. Officials say packaged products make it easier to identify details such as the manufacturer, production information and expiry date if a food safety problem is reported.

What The New Cooking Oil Rule Means

Under the new arrangement, retailers cannot take cooking oil from large drums, tins or other containers and sell it separately to customers. Edible oil must be sold in compliant packaging with the required product information clearly displayed.

The rule is aimed at improving traceability throughout the supply chain. If an unsafe or adulterated product reaches consumers, authorities can more easily identify its source and take action against the businesses involved.

FDA Steps Up Checks

The Maharashtra FDA is also looking beyond retail shops. The department plans to monitor different stages of the edible oil business, including manufacturing, packaging, transportation, distribution and retail sales.

The move follows recent enforcement activity involving loose and substandard edible oil. Earlier this month, FDA teams seized edible oil worth about ₹1.94 crore during raids in Beed district and suspended the licences of five establishments over food safety violations.

Restaurants And Food Businesses Also Under Watch

Hotels, restaurants and other food businesses are expected to face closer scrutiny over how cooking oil is handled and used. Officials have also raised concerns about repeatedly heating and reusing cooking oil, which can create additional food safety concerns.

The FDA has stressed that food businesses must follow applicable licensing and food safety requirements. Businesses involved in manufacturing, distribution or retail that fail to meet the rules could face enforcement action.

Why Loose Oil Is A Concern

Loose cooking oil can be difficult for consumers to assess because information about its origin, manufacturing date and shelf life may not be readily available. In the event of suspected contamination or food poisoning, that lack of information can also make tracing the product more difficult.

Packaged oil, by comparison, generally provides consumers with a label that can be checked before purchase. The Maharashtra FDA says stronger traceability is an important part of its wider food safety efforts.

For consumers, the immediate takeaway is simple. The FDA has advised people to avoid buying loose or unsealed edible oil and choose properly packaged products instead.
