Tilak Varma Takes South Zone to Final: South Zone are through to the Duleep Trophy final after a convincing seven wicket win over North Zone in Bengaluru on Wednesday. Captain Tilak Varma once again took charge with the bat, finishing the match unbeaten after playing an important role in both innings.
Chasing 181 for victory, South Zone reached 182 for three. Ricky Bhui gave the chase a useful start with 42, while Narayan Jagadeesan added 43. Tilak then stayed at the crease until the end, making an unbeaten 51 from 79 balls. Ravichandran Smaran supported him with 32 not out as the pair finished the job without further trouble.
North Zone had resumed the final day on 256 for seven, hoping to stretch their lead and make the chase difficult. That plan did not last long. MD Nidheesh struck with the ball and completed a five wicket haul as North Zone were bowled out for 286, leaving South Zone with a target of 181.
The foundation for South Zone’s victory, however, was laid much earlier in the match. After North Zone were dismissed for 195 in their first innings, South Zone were in trouble at 80 for five. Tilak responded with a patient unbeaten 116, joining hands with Shreyas Gopal for a 175 run partnership. South eventually reached 312 and took a valuable lead.
Tilak’s consistency became the defining feature of the semifinal. He first rescued his side from a difficult position with his century and then returned in the chase to produce another unbeaten fifty. His efforts earned him the Player of the Match award.
South Zone will now meet East Zone in the Duleep Trophy final. The title clash is scheduled to begin on September 6 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. East Zone booked their place after defeating Central Zone by four wickets in the other semifinal.
For South Zone, the result also sets up a chance to go one step further after finishing as runners up last season. With their captain in this kind of form, they will head into the final with plenty of confidence.
