Meerut Mavericks produced a dominant performance in Sunday’s final, beating Lucknow Falcons by 94 runs. Veteran India pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar led the Lucknow side, but it was Rinku’s team that walked away with the trophy.

Rinku did not have a memorable outing with the bat in the final. His contribution came in a different form as captain, with Meerut completing a highly successful campaign under his leadership.

The Mavericks played 10 matches during the tournament and won nine of them. Their strong run, combined with Rinku’s experience in the IPL, has now sparked talk about whether he could be given the KKR captaincy in the coming season.

The situation has become particularly interesting following Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement from cricket. KKR will need to think about their leadership options, and Rinku already has an important place within the franchise.

He was KKR’s vice captain during the latest IPL season. Since making his IPL debut in 2018, Rinku has played 73 matches and has developed into one of the team’s most dependable middle order batters.

His popularity with KKR fans rose sharply after his unforgettable performance against Gujarat Titans, when he smashed five sixes in the final over to pull off a remarkable win. He has since become one of the most recognisable faces in the franchise.

Rinku was not selected for India’s T20I series against Afghanistan, which allowed him to take up the leadership role with Meerut Mavericks. Instead of simply treating the tournament as a chance to get more match time, he used the opportunity to show another side of his game.

Whether that performance is enough to earn him the KKR captaincy remains to be seen. For now, though, Rinku has certainly added his name to the conversation at a time when the franchise is looking ahead to its next leadership chapter.
