Rahul Dravid Emerges in Race for England Test Head Coach Role
Former India coach Rahul Dravid has reportedly entered the list of candidates for England Test head coach as the ECB begins its search ahead of next year's Ashes series.
Former India head coach Rahul Dravid has reportedly become one of the leading names under consideration for the England Test team’s head coach position. The England and Wales Cricket Board is searching for a new leader after removing Brendon McCullum from the Test role following the team’s recent home series defeat against New Zealand.
The decision is believed to be part of England’s preparations for next year’s highly anticipated Ashes series. The board is looking for an experienced coach who can strengthen the team’s performance in the longest format of the game.
According to a report published by The Daily Telegraph, Dravid’s successful coaching record with India has made him an attractive option. During his tenure, India won the T20 World Cup and also reached the World Test Championship final. His calm approach, technical knowledge and long term planning are said to be among the qualities that have impressed England’s selectors.
The report also noted that Dravid may not be actively seeking a full time coaching role at this stage. However, coaching only the England Test side could allow him to spend more time with his family while remaining involved in the format he values the most. The report suggested that the ECB should at least explore whether he would be interested in the opportunity.
Former England head coach Andy Flower is also considered a strong contender. Flower guided England to three Ashes series victories and helped the team reach the top of the ICC Test rankings during his tenure. His recent success in franchise cricket has further strengthened his credentials.
Several other experienced names are reportedly under consideration, including Glamorgan head coach Richard Dawson, Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara, Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson, former Australia coach Justin Langer and England legend Andrew Flintoff.
Meanwhile, the ECB has confirmed that although Brendon McCullum will no longer lead the England Test side, he will continue as the head coach of England’s One Day International and Twenty20 teams.
