India Begin Sri Lanka Test Series With WTC Final In Sight

India are set to open their Test series against Sri Lanka on Saturday, with captain Shubman Gill making it clear that the World Test Championship final remains the teams biggest target.

The opening Test in Galle will be a landmark game for Indian cricket as it will mark the teams 600th Test match. It will also be the 50th Test played at the Galle venue.

India currently sit fifth in the WTC standings. With nine Tests still to play, Gill believes the team will need a strong run of results, potentially six or seven wins, to put itself in a comfortable position for a place in next years final at The Oval in London.

The Indian team arrived in Sri Lanka early to get used to the local conditions. They also played a practice match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo, giving the players valuable time in the middle before the series begins.

Gill also spoke positively about Indias pace attack despite the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. He praised Prasidh Krishna for his recent bowling form and said Gurnoor Brar has shown the ability to generate useful bounce with the older ball.

The Indian captain expects the Sri Lankan pitches to offer limited assistance to fast bowlers. That could make patience and smart changes in bowling plans particularly important during the Tests. India will look to create pressure through different approaches rather than simply waiting for help from the surface.

Gill also backed Devdutt Padikkal, whose previous experience playing for India A in Sri Lanka could prove useful. The captain pointed out that conditions at an open ground such as Galle can make wind direction an important factor, particularly for batters.

With the first Test approaching, India will hope their early arrival, preparation and understanding of the conditions can translate into a strong start. For Gill, however, the larger picture remains clear. Every result in this series will matter as India chase another WTC final appearance.
