How Ajinkya Rahane Helped Save Yashasvi Jaiswal From a Four Match Ban

Ajinkya Rahane has recalled an incident from the 2022 Duleep Trophy final in which a timely decision as captain helped Yashasvi Jaiswal avoid a possible four match suspension.

The incident happened when West Zone faced South Zone in the final. Rahane was leading West Zone, while Jaiswal was still establishing himself as a young player in domestic cricket.

Jaiswal became involved in a heated exchange with South Zone batter Raviteja after repeatedly sledging him. The situation continued to escalate and eventually attracted the attention of the umpires, who approached Rahane about the behaviour.

Rather than allowing the situation to worsen, Rahane decided to take immediate action. He instructed Jaiswal to leave the field and go to the dugout. Jaiswal was reportedly unhappy with the decision but eventually followed his captain’s instructions.

Rahane has now explained that his decision was not simply about controlling emotions on the field. He believed the situation could have resulted in serious disciplinary consequences for the young cricketer if it was allowed to continue.

According to Rahane, the match officials were already considering a four match suspension for Jaiswal. The situation changed after Rahane intervened and removed him from the field before the matter could escalate further.

Rahane recalled that match referee Vengalil Narayanan had even prepared a letter regarding the proposed suspension. After the match, the referee reportedly showed Rahane the letter and told him that he would tear it up because of the way Rahane had handled the situation. The letter was then torn up in front of him.

Jaiswal ultimately avoided the suspension, allowing him to continue his development without a lengthy interruption. He has since established himself as one of India’s prominent young batters.

Looking back, Rahane said that a captain has a responsibility to protect and guide teammates when their actions could affect their future. He also acknowledged that sledging is common in cricket and can sometimes add intensity to a match, but stressed that it should not cross the line.

The incident has gained fresh attention because of how dramatically Jaiswal’s career has developed since then. What could have resulted in a significant suspension was instead resolved through a captain’s quick intervention.
