A hot cup of tea or coffee is often the first thing many travelers prepare after checking into a hotel room. With an electric kettle placed alongside complimentary beverages, it appears to be a convenient and safe option. However, hospitality professionals and experienced travelers are increasingly advising guests to be cautious before using these appliances.

One of the biggest concerns is that hotel kettles are not always used for their intended purpose. According to reports shared by hotel workers and frequent travelers, some guests have been known to use electric kettles to wash small clothing items such as socks and undergarments. While this may sound unbelievable, hotel staff have acknowledged that such incidents do occur, raising serious hygiene concerns for future guests.

Cleaning practices add another layer of concern. Housekeeping teams usually have limited time to prepare rooms between guests. Their main focus is changing bed linen, cleaning bathrooms and tidying the room. As a result, the inside of the kettle may not receive a thorough cleaning. In many cases, only the exterior is wiped down before it is placed back for the next visitor.

Experts also point out that leftover water inside the kettle can become a breeding ground for microorganisms if it remains there for an extended period. Moist conditions encourage the formation of biofilm, a slimy layer where bacteria and fungi can grow. Since this buildup is often invisible to the naked eye, travelers may have no idea what is inside the appliance before using it.

Although not every hotel kettle is unhygienic, travel experts recommend taking a few simple precautions. If you need hot water, requesting it directly from the hotel kitchen through room service is generally considered a safer choice. Kitchen equipment is usually cleaned more frequently and follows stricter hygiene standards.

If using the in room kettle is unavoidable, experts suggest filling it with fresh water and boiling it two or three times before preparing any drink. Discarding the first few rounds of boiled water may help reduce potential contamination. Frequent travelers may also consider carrying a compact personal electric kettle, especially during long trips or business travel.

The convenience of an in room kettle should not automatically be mistaken for cleanliness. While many hotels maintain high hygiene standards, the way previous guests used the appliance and how thoroughly it was cleaned can vary significantly. Taking a few extra precautions can help travelers enjoy their stay while reducing unnecessary health risks.
