Served Bad Food at a Restaurant Here Is How You Can File an Official Complaint
Consumers can report unsafe food unhygienic restaurants and poor food quality through the official complaint system helping authorities investigate violations and improve public food safety standards across India

Finding spoiled or contaminated food at a restaurant can quickly ruin a meal. While many customers choose to argue with the staff or leave without returning, experts say reporting the issue through the proper channel is a more effective way to protect both yourself and future customers. Filing an official complaint allows food safety authorities to investigate and take action where necessary.
Food safety complaints can be submitted online through the official complaint platform provided by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. Consumers can use the Food Safety Connect portal or the mobile application to report issues related to food quality, hygiene and safety without visiting any office.
The first step is to collect as much information as possible about the incident. If you notice spoiled food, insects, foreign objects or any other hygiene concern, take clear photographs or videos before leaving the restaurant. Keeping the payment bill or receipt is equally important because it serves as proof that you purchased food from the establishment.
When filing a complaint, provide accurate details about the restaurant, including its name and complete address. If the food bill displays the restaurant’s food license number, adding that information can help authorities identify the business more quickly during their investigation.
After gathering the necessary details, visit the official Food Safety Connect platform or use the mobile application. Choose the consumer grievance option and enter your basic information, including your name, mobile number and email address. Then explain the issue clearly, mentioning what happened and why you believe the food was unsafe or unhygienic.
Supporting evidence plays a major role in the complaint process. Upload photographs of the food, videos if available and a copy of the restaurant bill. These documents help investigators understand the situation and strengthen the complaint.
Once the complaint has been submitted successfully, you will receive a reference number. This number allows you to track the progress of your complaint and check whether authorities have started reviewing the case.
If the complaint appears valid, a local Food Safety Officer may inspect the restaurant. During the inspection, officials can examine food preparation practices, kitchen hygiene, storage conditions and overall compliance with food safety regulations. If serious violations are found, authorities may impose penalties or take further regulatory action depending on the severity of the issue.
Reporting unsafe food is not only about resolving an individual complaint. It also helps improve food safety standards by encouraging restaurants to maintain proper hygiene and follow regulations. Timely reporting can prevent similar incidents from affecting other customers.
Consumers should always remain calm when faced with poor food quality and avoid unnecessary arguments. Instead, documenting the issue carefully and using the official complaint process is often the most effective way to ensure that food safety concerns are investigated and addressed appropriately.
