Can You Eat Fish and Curd Together Experts Separate Food Myths From Scientific Facts

The belief that fish and curd should never be eaten together remains common but experts say scientific evidence does not support many of the health concerns associated with this combination

The idea that fish and curd should never be eaten together has been passed down through generations in many households. Families often advise against eating curd immediately after a fish meal, believing the combination can lead to digestive problems or even skin disorders. However, modern medical science presents a more balanced view, suggesting that many of these claims are not backed by strong scientific evidence.

One of the most common beliefs is that eating fish with curd can cause skin diseases such as psoriasis. Medical experts say there is currently no reliable scientific evidence linking this food combination to psoriasis or similar skin conditions. Psoriasis is generally considered an autoimmune disorder with genetic and immune system related causes rather than a condition triggered by eating fish and curd together.

That said, the combination may not suit everyone. In many parts of India, fish curry is prepared with tamarind or other sour ingredients, making it highly acidic. Curd is also a fermented food and naturally becomes more acidic as it matures. Consuming two acidic foods together may cause discomfort in some individuals, particularly those with sensitive digestive systems.

People who are prone to indigestion, bloating or excess gas may experience mild digestive discomfort after eating fish curry followed immediately by curd rice. However, this does not mean the combination is harmful to everyone. Many healthy individuals consume both foods together without experiencing any noticeable side effects.

Ayurveda offers a different perspective on the subject. Traditional Ayurvedic texts classify fish and curd as an incompatible food combination, often referred to as incompatible dietary pairing. According to this system of medicine, such combinations may disturb digestion and affect the body’s natural balance in certain individuals. However, these traditional views are not fully supported by modern clinical research.

Nutrition experts often emphasize that the body’s response to food varies from person to person. Factors such as digestive health, food preparation methods and individual tolerance play a significant role in determining whether a particular combination causes discomfort.

Rather than following food myths without question, health professionals recommend paying attention to how your own body reacts. If eating fish and curd together does not cause digestive issues, there is no strong scientific reason to avoid the combination completely. On the other hand, those who frequently experience stomach discomfort after consuming acidic or heavy meals may benefit from spacing these foods apart.

The long standing belief surrounding fish and curd appears to be rooted more in traditional practices and Ayurvedic principles than in modern scientific evidence. While respecting cultural food traditions, experts encourage people to make dietary choices based on their individual health, digestive comfort and guidance from qualified healthcare professionals when necessary.
