Tibet Earthquake Triggers Tremors in Nepal

Tibet was hit by another earthquake on Wednesday, with tremors also reaching parts of neighbouring Nepal. The shaking caused concern among residents in several areas, with some people rushing out of their homes.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported the earthquake at magnitude 5.3. It placed the epicentre at a depth of around 35 kilometres beneath the surface.

India’s National Centre for Seismology recorded a slightly lower magnitude of 5.0 for the same earthquake. Differences in magnitude estimates are common between seismic monitoring agencies as they use different data and calculation methods.

Reports of the tremors from Nepal added to concerns in the region, which has experienced repeated seismic activity. People who felt the ground move reportedly stepped outside their houses as a precaution.

There were no immediate official reports detailing deaths, injuries or major property damage following Wednesday’s earthquake. Authorities are expected to assess the situation and provide further information if any damage is confirmed.

The latest tremor comes only days after another earthquake was recorded in Tibet. That earlier quake was measured at magnitude 5.1 by the United States Geological Survey, which reported that its epicentre was about 10 kilometres below the surface.

The repeated earthquakes have kept attention on seismic activity across the Himalayan region. Tibet and neighbouring areas are considered earthquake prone because of the ongoing movement and interaction of major tectonic plates.

For now, officials are monitoring the situation and checking for possible damage in areas affected by Wednesday’s shaking. Residents in regions that experienced the tremors have been urged to remain alert and follow local safety instructions.
