Tarun Tejpal Ordered to Surrender: Supreme Court Gives Tarun Tejpal Two Weeks to Surrender in Rape Case
The Supreme Court has directed former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal to surrender within two weeks in connection with the 2013 sexual assault case involving a former colleague.
Tarun Tejpal Ordered to Surrender: The Supreme Court has refused to grant immediate relief to former Tehelka editor in chief Tarun Tejpal in a sexual assault case involving a former colleague. The court has directed him to surrender within two weeks.
The case stems from an incident reported during the ThinkFest event held in Goa in November 2013. A woman who worked with Tejpal had accused him of sexual assault, following which a case was registered.
Tejpal was acquitted by a Goa sessions court in 2021. The Goa government later challenged the acquittal before the Bombay High Court. After hearing the matter, the High Court overturned the trial court decision, convicted Tejpal and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. It also imposed a fine of Rs 10.21 lakh and directed him to surrender within four weeks.
Tejpal then approached the Supreme Court, challenging the High Court verdict and seeking temporary protection from surrender. The apex court, however, declined to provide immediate relief and instead directed him to surrender within two weeks.
The Supreme Court’s latest direction means Tejpal will have to comply with the surrender order while his challenge to the High Court judgment remains before the court.
