Krishna Waters Enter Veligonda Tunnel for First Time
Veligonda Project marks a historic milestone as Krishna waters enter its tunnel for the first time, bringing irrigation and drinking water relief to drought affected areas of Andhra Pradesh.
The long awaited Veligonda project has reached a major milestone with Krishna waters flowing through its tunnel for the first time. State minister and TDP working president Nara Lokesh described the development as a historic moment for the drought affected region.
Lokesh said the achievement fulfils a dream that has continued for nearly three decades. He said the sight of water emerging from the tunnel was deeply emotional, particularly for people who have been waiting for the project to become a reality for generations.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is scheduled to dedicate Phase 1 of the project to the nation and release 10.7 TMC of water into the Nallamala Sagar, Lokesh said. He also recalled that Chandrababu had laid the foundation stone for the project exactly 30 years ago.
The minister described Veligonda not simply as a major engineering project but as a lifeline for farmers, families and communities in one of the state’s drought prone areas.
According to Lokesh, Phase 1 of the Veligonda project is expected to provide irrigation water to around 1.19 lakh acres. It will also help address drinking water needs for nearly four lakh people in the region.
The project is expected to bring particular relief to residents of Prakasam district, where several areas have struggled with water shortages for years. Lokesh expressed hope that the arrival of Krishna waters would support agriculture and contribute to wider development across the region.
