Kolkata Hotel Fire Kills Nine:
A fire broke out at a hotel near New Market in Kolkata after midnight, killing nine people. Officials said all the deceased were Bangladeshi nationals who had come to the city for medical treatment.
The guests were reportedly asleep when the fire started. Smoke and flames quickly spread through the hotel, leaving some people unable to get out in time. Firefighters were called to the spot and began rescue operations soon after.
A child was also among those who died. More than six people were injured in the incident and were taken for treatment.
The exact reason for the fire is yet to be confirmed. Officials suspect that an air conditioner may have exploded and triggered the blaze. A detailed investigation will establish what caused the fire and how quickly it spread.
Firefighters managed to bring the situation under control after a rescue operation at the hotel. Officials are also checking the safety arrangements at the building as part of the investigation.
The incident has come days after another fatal hotel fire in West Bengal. Eight people were killed in a blaze at a hotel in Tarapith in Birbhum district. That fire reportedly began near the reception area on the ground floor and spread through the building while guests were sleeping.
The latest incident has again brought attention to fire safety at hotels, particularly those used by visitors coming to Kolkata for medical treatment. Authorities are expected to examine the emergency exits, electrical systems and other safety arrangements at the affected hotel.
