Former CCI Chairman Dhanendra Kumar Dies in Delhi House Fire After AC Explosion

A tragic fire accident in New Delhi has claimed the life of Dhanendra Kumar, the founding Chairman of the Competition Commission of India and a distinguished retired IAS officer. The incident occurred late on Thursday night at his residence in the Hauz Khas area of the national capital, leaving the administrative community in shock.

According to officials, the fire broke out after an explosion in the indoor unit of an air conditioner inside the house. Thick smoke quickly spread through the residence, creating a dangerous situation for everyone present. Emergency teams and firefighters rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about the incident.

Dhanendra Kumar, 80, and his son were rescued from the house and taken to a nearby hospital. However, doctors were unable to save the veteran bureaucrat, who reportedly suffered severe effects from inhaling smoke. His son sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment under medical supervision. Authorities stated that no suspicious circumstances have been found in the case.

At the time of the incident, five people, including family members and domestic staff, were inside the residence. The fire reportedly started around 11.18 pm and spread rapidly due to the smoke generated after the explosion.

Dhanendra Kumar was one of India’s most respected civil servants. A 1968 batch IAS officer from the Haryana cadre, he held several key positions in both state and central governments during his long administrative career. He served as Secretary in important ministries, including Defence, Road Transport and Highways, and Culture, contributing significantly to policy and governance.

His influence extended beyond India as well. Between 2005 and 2009, he served as Executive Director at the World Bank, representing India along with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan. He played an important role in development and economic initiatives across South Asia during his tenure.

Soon after completing his assignment at the World Bank, he was appointed as the first Chairman of the Competition Commission of India in 2009. He remained in the position until 2011 and was instrumental in strengthening India’s competition law framework and establishing the institution’s foundations.

Over the years, Dhanendra Kumar also served as Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Haryana and headed major industrial development initiatives in the state. His contributions earned him national recognition, including the National Citizens Award and an honorary doctorate for public service.

Even after retirement, he remained actively engaged in mentoring young professionals and promoting competition law through advisory and academic initiatives. His sudden death in a house fire marks the end of a remarkable public service journey, and tributes continue to pour in from colleagues, officials, and well wishers across the country.
