Coalition Talks Intensify in Tamil Nadu as TVK Seeks Congress Support for Government Formation

With no party securing a clear majority in the 234 seat Tamil Nadu Assembly, Vijay led TVK begins coalition negotiations with Congress and left allies to form a stable government soon

Tamil Nadu is witnessing a rare political shift after the recent Assembly elections delivered a fractured mandate. For the first time in decades, the state appears set to be governed by a coalition rather than a single dominant party. Actor turned politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam has emerged as the largest party, but it has fallen short of the majority mark of 118 seats in the 234 member Assembly.

Alliance Talks Gain Momentum

Following the election outcome, discussions around forming a coalition government have gathered pace. Meetings held at the party headquarters on Tuesday between Vijay and newly elected MLAs indicated that negotiations are moving in a clear direction. Sources suggest that support from Congress, along with smaller parties like VCK and left allies, could help TVK cross the majority threshold comfortably.

Congress is believed to hold a small but crucial number of seats, making its role central in government formation. Informal talks are reportedly ongoing, with allied parties expressing willingness to join hands under a broader secular front.

Leaders Signal Support for Coalition Setup

Political leaders from potential alliance partners have openly indicated their preference for a coalition arrangement. VCK leadership has stated that the public mandate supports a joint government, while left parties are also expected to align with this framework. TVK insiders reveal that Vijay had already shown openness to coalition politics during his campaign, anticipating such a scenario.

Cabinet Sharing Formula Takes Shape

Negotiations are not limited to support alone, as discussions on cabinet distribution have also begun. Early indications suggest Congress could be offered two ministerial positions, while VCK and left parties may receive one each. TVK is likely to allocate between four to six cabinet posts to its allies to strengthen governance with experienced leaders.

This move is seen as strategic, considering that many TVK legislators are first time entrants in politics. Bringing in experienced partners is expected to add administrative balance and stability to the new government.

Plan to Bring Administrative Experience

To further strengthen governance, TVK is reportedly exploring ways to induct experienced bureaucrats into the political setup. One such name under consideration is former IAS officer U Sagayam, known for his clean image. There are discussions about facilitating his entry into the Assembly through a by election route.

Government Formation Timeline

Later in the day, TVK legislators are expected to formally elect Vijay as their legislative party leader. Following this, the Governor is likely to invite him to form the government. Party insiders indicate that Vijay may seek about a week to prove his majority on the Assembly floor, with the government expected to take charge soon after.

Political observers believe this development could mark a turning point in Tamil Nadu politics, breaking away from its long history of single party dominance and opening the door for coalition governance.
