The incident occurred on the third floor of the hospital when a ventilator reportedly exploded inside the unit. At the time, 39 newborn babies were being cared for in the facility.
Doctors, nurses and other hospital staff immediately began moving the babies to safety after the fire started. Most of the infants were taken out of the affected area before the situation could worsen.
However, three newborns could not be saved. Six others who suffered serious injuries have been shifted to a nearby super speciality hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
Authorities have ordered a detailed investigation to determine exactly how the fire started and whether any safety or maintenance issues contributed to the incident.
The tragedy has also triggered criticism from opposition parties in Maharashtra. They have questioned the maintenance and safety arrangements at the hospital and alleged that administrative lapses may have played a role in the incident.
The Amravati fire comes just days after another similar incident in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh. A fire broke out at a neonatal care unit in Chhindwara, killing one newborn and injuring two others.
The authorities are expected to examine the hospital’s equipment and fire safety arrangements as part of the investigation into the Amravati incident.
