Cold Medicine Restricted for Kids: The central government has tightened rules around medicines containing chlorpheniramine maleate and phenylephrine hydrochloride, specifically restricting their use in children below four years of age.
The decision follows recommendations from the Drugs Technical Advisory Board and an expert committee, which raised concerns about the potential risks associated with the combination in young children.
Under the new direction, manufacturers cannot make, sell or distribute these fixed dose combination medicines for use in children under four. Companies have also been instructed to place a clear warning on the product label, packaging and promotional material stating that the medicine should not be used for this age group.
The move is aimed at preventing inappropriate use of the combination medicine, particularly in very young children whose response to certain medicines can differ significantly from that of older patients.
Fixed dose combination medicines contain two or more active ingredients in a predetermined dose. The government has previously restricted or prohibited several such combinations after reviewing their safety and effectiveness.
Parents and caregivers should therefore check medicine labels carefully and consult a qualified healthcare professional before giving medicines to young children, particularly for cold and related symptoms.
