Veteran actress Shavukaru Janaki has been receiving treatment for respiratory problems, with doctors closely monitoring her condition after her health reportedly worsened recently.

Shavukaru Janaki in ICU: Veteran actress and Padma Shri awardee Shavukaru Janaki is currently receiving treatment in the ICU at a private hospital in Chennai. The 95 year old actress was admitted about a week ago after experiencing health issues related to age and respiratory problems.

Her condition reportedly became more serious on Wednesday night, following which doctors shifted her to the intensive care unit. According to reports, her condition is currently stable and she continues to remain under medical observation.

Janaki, whose original name is Sankaramanchi Janaki, was born on December 12, 1931, in Rajahmundry. She entered the performing arts through radio programmes during her early years and became known for her clear diction and strong voice.

Her film career began in 1950 with Shavukaru, in which she appeared opposite N. T. Rama Rao. The film became a major success, and the name Shavukaru became permanently associated with the actress.

Over the decades, Janaki established herself as one of the prominent performers in South Indian cinema. She acted in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam films and appeared in more than 400 movies. She played leading roles in around 200 films and later moved successfully into character roles.

Her career also brought her opportunities to work with several major stars, including N. T. Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, M. G. Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan and Gemini Ganesan. Her ability to work across languages became one of the notable features of her long career.

Janaki continued acting even as the industry changed across generations. Her performance as Chilakamma in Samsaram Oka Chadarangam remains particularly remembered by Telugu audiences.

Her contribution to Indian cinema was recognised with the Padma Shri in 2022. She has also received several other honours, including the Kalaimamani award from the Tamil Nadu government.

News of her health condition has caused concern among film personalities and fans. Messages wishing the veteran actress a speedy recovery have been pouring in as she remains under doctors’ care in Chennai.
