Indian Marine Engineer Dies After Attack on Vessel Near Strait of Hormuz

The family of an Indian marine engineer has confirmed his death following the attack on a merchant vessel near the Strait of Hormuz, bringing a tragic end to the search for the crew member who had been reported missing after the incident.

The deceased has been identified as Heramb Karmarkar, a 30 year old marine engineer from Pune. He was serving aboard the merchant vessel GFS Galaxy, which came under attack near the coast of Oman while passing through one of the world’s busiest maritime routes.

After the attack, rescue teams managed to save 10 Indian nationals who were on board the vessel. However, Heramb remained unaccounted for during the search operation. His family later confirmed that he had lost his life.

Speaking after receiving the confirmation, a family member appealed to the Government of India to ensure that his mortal remains are brought back home with dignity. The family expressed grief over the loss of the young engineer and requested all possible assistance for the repatriation process.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the Indian Embassy in Oman has been working closely with local authorities, the vessel’s management, and other concerned agencies since the attack. The embassy has also been extending support to the affected crew members and their families.

India earlier described the attack on the commercial vessel as a matter of serious concern and reiterated the importance of ensuring the safety of merchant ships operating in international waters. The government also appreciated the cooperation extended by the Omani authorities during the rescue efforts.

The incident occurred in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important shipping corridors through which a significant share of global oil trade passes. The attack has once again drawn attention to the security challenges facing commercial vessels operating in the region amid continuing geopolitical tensions.
