Andy Burnham Takes Charge as UK Prime Minister Announces New Cabinet
Andy Burnham has assumed office as the United Kingdom Prime Minister, unveiling a long term reform agenda while appointing two lawmakers of Indian origin to key cabinet positions.
The United Kingdom has entered a new political chapter with Labour leader Andy Burnham taking office as Prime Minister following the resignation of Keir Starmer. Burnham officially assumed the role after meeting King Charles III and immediately outlined his vision for the country’s future.
Presenting his priorities from Downing Street, the new Prime Minister said his government would focus on a ten year roadmap aimed at strengthening the economy, reducing pressure on household finances and introducing a fresh political direction. He described the plan as an effort to reshape governance and restore public confidence.
One of the first major decisions of the new administration was a cabinet reshuffle. Several senior ministers from the previous government were replaced as Burnham formed a new leadership team aligned with his policy goals.
Among the new appointments, two Members of Parliament of Indian origin secured cabinet positions. Kanishka Narayan was named Minister for Artificial Intelligence, while Lisa Nandy was appointed Culture Secretary. The decision also marked the first time the Artificial Intelligence portfolio received cabinet level status in the UK government.
Political observers noted that Britain has witnessed frequent leadership changes in recent years, reflecting a period of political uncertainty. Burnham now faces the challenge of providing stability while implementing reforms promised by the Labour government.
Kanishka Narayan was born in Muzaffarpur in the Indian state of Bihar before moving to the United Kingdom with his family during childhood. He later studied at the University of Oxford and Stanford University before building a career across technology, financial innovation and climate related initiatives. He has also worked with global investment firms and advised businesses and public institutions.
Narayan entered Parliament after winning the Vale of Glamorgan constituency in the 2024 general election. Before joining the cabinet, he served in roles related to environmental affairs and online safety while also contributing to community development and policy initiatives across the UK.
Lisa Nandy, another prominent British politician of Indian heritage, continues to play an important role in national politics. Born in Manchester, she has represented Wigan in Parliament since 2010 and became the first woman and the first person of Asian heritage elected from the constituency. Her appointment reflects the growing presence of leaders with Indian roots in senior positions within the British government.
