Telangana Red Alert: Telangana Weather Alert: Red Warning Issued for 17 Districts Amid Heavy Rain

Telangana Red Alert: Telangana is bracing for another spell of intense rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department issuing red warnings for several districts as a depression over the Bay of Bengal moves towards the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coast.

The weather system is expected to strengthen further before crossing the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur during the night of September 23 and the early hours of September 24. The system is expected to bring widespread rainfall to Telangana as well.

The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rain at isolated locations in parts of Telangana on Wednesday and Thursday. Very heavy rainfall is also expected on September 25 and 26. Thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds are likely to accompany the rain in several areas.

The red warning covers districts including Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Warangal and Hanamkonda. Some areas could receive more than 204.5 mm of rainfall, according to the weather department.

Other districts have also been placed under orange and yellow warnings as the weather system continues to influence the state. Adilabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Jangaon and Siddipet are among the areas facing the possibility of heavy to very heavy rain.

The developing weather pattern is linked to a depression over the East Central and adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal. The system was located southeast of Gopalpur and east of Visakhapatnam before moving towards the coast. The IMD expects it to intensify into a deep depression before landfall.

Hyderabad also experienced sudden heavy showers on Tuesday. Rain caused waterlogging at several locations and slowed traffic on major roads and junctions. Areas including Khairatabad, Kukatpally, Musheerabad and Abdullapurmet recorded notable rainfall during the spell.

The state government has asked officials to remain alert as the rainfall is expected to intensify. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy directed the authorities to closely monitor the situation and take steps to prevent inconvenience to the public.

In Hyderabad, the commissioners of the three municipal corporations, HYDRAA officials and police commissioners have been asked to coordinate their response. The focus is on preventing water from accumulating on major roads, junctions and residential areas while responding quickly to rain related problems.

The rainfall is expected to be particularly significant across northern, eastern and northeastern parts of Telangana. Authorities are watching the situation closely because intense rain over a short period can lead to waterlogging and localised flooding in vulnerable areas.

The IMD’s latest warning indicates that the weather threat will continue beyond Wednesday. Extremely heavy rainfall is forecast for September 23 and 24, followed by very heavy rain on September 25 and 26. No warning has been issued for Telangana from September 27 under the current subdivision forecast.

Residents in the affected districts are being advised to stay updated with official weather information and exercise caution during periods of intense rain and thunderstorms. Motorists, in particular, may face difficult conditions on waterlogged roads and should avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather.

With the Bay of Bengal system approaching the coast, Telangana is likely to remain under the influence of wet weather for the next few days. The district wise situation will depend on the movement and intensity of the system, making the next 48 hours particularly important for the state.
