Foreign Universities: Several leading international universities are planning campuses in Telangana as Hyderabad strengthens its position as a global education destination under India's higher education reforms and infrastructure growth.
Foreign Universities: Telangana is rapidly emerging as a preferred destination for international universities looking to establish campuses in India. Encouraged by the National Education Policy 2020 and the University Grants Commission guidelines, several globally reputed institutions are exploring opportunities to expand their presence in Hyderabad.
The University of London from the United Kingdom and the University of Colorado from the United States have already submitted applications to the UGC to set up offshore campuses in Telangana. In addition, nearly 15 other universities from countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand have expressed interest in launching academic centers in the state.
Officials believe Hyderabad offers a strong advantage because of its modern infrastructure, excellent connectivity, thriving technology ecosystem and high quality of urban living. These factors have positioned the city as a promising international education destination.
Some universities are expected to begin operations from leased commercial spaces before moving to permanent campuses. The Telangana government is also considering allocating land in Future City to support long term campus development and advanced research facilities.
Institutions such as Purdue University, Northeastern University, the University of Birmingham, the University of Western Australia, Newcastle University, the University of Chichester, the University of Hertfordshire and the University of Waikato are among those exploring opportunities in the state.
Experts say the arrival of foreign universities could bring significant long term benefits. Students may gain access to world class education without leaving India, while new campuses are expected to generate employment, attract investment, encourage industry partnerships and strengthen research collaboration with leading institutions already operating in Hyderabad.
The initiative is also expected to reduce the number of students pursuing higher education abroad by providing internationally recognized academic programs within the country. Officials believe this move will further strengthen Hyderabad’s reputation as one of India’s leading knowledge and innovation hubs.
