Sonam Wangchuk Seeks Hospital Discharge to Join Parliament Protest

Social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi, has requested temporary discharge so he can participate in the Chalo Parliament protest organised by the Cockroach Janata Party.

In a letter addressed to the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Wangchuk stated that his health had improved and his recent medical test results were normal. He requested permission to leave the hospital for a short period to attend the protest before returning for further treatment.

The demonstration has been organised over demands related to alleged examination paper leak incidents, with protesters calling for Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign, claiming moral responsibility. The campaign has drawn large numbers of unemployed youth and supporters to the national capital.

The protest march began from Jantar Mantar and moved towards Parliament under the leadership of Cockroach Janata Party founder Abhijeet Deepke. Security personnel attempted to stop the procession, and police intervention created tense scenes. Despite restrictions, many protesters continued their march, prompting Parliament security officials to close entry gates as a precaution.

Hospital authorities, however, maintained that Wangchuk should remain under observation. Doctors said his condition is stable but requires continuous monitoring, particularly through regular blood tests. According to the official health bulletin, specialists from Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS have recommended ongoing medical supervision to respond immediately if any complications arise.

Meanwhile, another legal development has emerged in the case. Wangchuk’s wife, Geetanjali Angmo, has approached the Delhi High Court seeking permission to shift him from Safdarjung Hospital to a private medical facility of the family’s choice.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya agreed to hear the appeal after an earlier order had declined similar relief. During the proceedings, senior advocate Akhil Sibal, appearing for Geetanjali Angmo, argued that Wangchuk had been moved from his hunger strike venue at Jantar Mantar to the hospital without prior notice. He also submitted that every citizen has the right to receive treatment at a hospital of their own choice.

The matter is expected to be examined further as both the medical and legal aspects continue to unfold.
