Shehzad Poonawalla Removes BJP Spokesperson Tag Fueling Exit Speculation
Political circles are abuzz after Shehzad Poonawalla removed the BJP national spokesperson title from his profile though neither he nor the party has issued an official statement.

Former Bharatiya Janata Party national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla has sparked widespread political speculation after removing the designation of BJP National Spokesperson from his profile on X. The unexpected move has led to discussions about whether he is preparing to step away from active politics, although no official confirmation has been issued.
Poonawalla shared a screenshot of his updated X profile with the caption My updated bio. In the revised description, he identified himself with the words Religion Islam Culture Hindu Ideology Bharatiya while also describing himself as the author of GST Ki Yatra and a follower of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The notable omission was the BJP national spokesperson designation that had earlier appeared on his profile.
Soon after updating his profile, the 38 year old politician reshared clips from two of his earlier interviews. In one of the videos, he said that serving society is not limited to contesting elections or holding public office. According to him, meaningful public service can continue even without occupying a political position.
In another interview clip, Poonawalla revealed that he had originally planned to step away from active politics immediately after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. However, he explained that he decided to continue working for the party because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emotional appeal and the crucial Assembly elections in states such as Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra and West Bengal. While sharing the video again, he added the caption saying the decision had already been delayed by two years.
Despite the growing buzz on social media, neither Poonawalla nor the BJP leadership has issued a formal statement regarding his political future. Adding to the uncertainty, his Instagram profile still identifies him as the BJP National Spokesperson, creating confusion over whether the change on X reflects an official decision or a personal update.
The development has generated considerable attention because Poonawalla has been one of the BJP’s most recognisable faces in television debates and media discussions. His strong defence of the party on various national issues earned him a prominent position as one of its leading spokespersons.
Before joining the BJP, Poonawalla was associated with the Congress party. He came into the national spotlight in 2017 after publicly opposing the Congress presidential election process and criticising dynastic politics within the party. His stand eventually led to his exit from Congress and later his entry into the BJP, where he was entrusted with the responsibility of national spokesperson.
A lawyer by profession and an active political commentator, Poonawalla has remained a familiar figure in public discourse over the past several years. His latest profile change has therefore triggered fresh debate over his future role in politics.
Until an official clarification is issued, the reasons behind the removal of the BJP designation remain unclear. For now, the political fraternity continues to closely watch whether the move signals a complete withdrawal from active politics or simply a change in his public profile.
