Over 120 Devotees Hospitalised After Crowd Panic During Puri Rath Yatra

A massive gathering of devotees during the Puri Rath Yatra led to a stampede scare on the Grand Road, leaving more than 120 people in need of medical attention. The incident occurred after heavy crowding caused panic and disrupted the smooth movement of pilgrims attending the annual chariot festival.

Officials said the situation developed when thousands of devotees converged on the procession route at the same time, creating severe congestion. As movement slowed, several people reportedly experienced breathing difficulties and discomfort because of the overcrowded conditions.

Medical teams stationed along the festival route responded immediately. Many devotees received first aid at temporary medical camps, while those requiring additional care were shifted to nearby hospitals. Authorities said most of the affected individuals were in stable condition.

Following the incident, police personnel, emergency responders, and volunteers intensified crowd management operations. Additional pathways were opened to improve pedestrian movement and allow ambulances and emergency vehicles to reach affected areas without delay.

The Puri Rath Yatra is one of India’s largest religious festivals, attracting lakhs of devotees from different parts of the country every year. Managing such a massive crowd remains a significant challenge for local authorities during the celebrations.

Officials later confirmed that the situation was brought under control after additional safety measures were implemented. Devotees have been advised to follow official instructions and avoid overcrowded sections of the route to ensure a safe pilgrimage experience.
