Noel Tata Exits Trent After Three Decades: A significant chapter has come to a close at Trent Limited, the retail arm of the Tata Group, as Noel Tata announced that he will step down from his role as Chairman. Addressing shareholders during the company’s 47th Annual General Meeting, he confirmed that the gathering would be his final one as Chairman, bringing an end to a long and influential journey with the company.

His departure comes in line with Tata Group governance guidelines, which set the retirement age for non executive directors at 70 years. With Noel Tata set to turn 70 in November this year, the transition marks the conclusion of an important phase in the group’s retail business.

Noel Tata’s association with Trent has been central to the company’s growth story. The company was originally founded by his mother Simone Tata after the sale of Lakme. He joined Trent’s board as a director in 1998 and became its first Managing Director in June 1999. From that point onward, he played a defining role in shaping the company’s retail strategy and long term vision.

Under his leadership, Trent evolved from a business with a single Westside outlet into one of India’s largest retail networks, operating more than 1200 stores across the country. The successful expansion of brands such as Zudio in fashion retail and Star in the supermarket segment further strengthened the company’s market presence and growth trajectory.

In the company’s FY26 annual report, Noel Tata described Trent’s progress as a steady and purposeful evolution. During his tenure, the company achieved remarkable financial growth, with revenue reaching Rs 19701 crore. His exit marks the end of an era that helped establish Trent as one of the most influential names in India’s retail sector.
