Modi in Indonesia: Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised former Odisha Chief Minister Biju Patnaik in Indonesia, recalling his courageous role in supporting the country's freedom movement and strengthening bilateral relations.

Modi in Indonesia: Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the historic bond between India and Indonesia while addressing the Indonesian Parliament during his official visit to Jakarta. He paid tribute to former Odisha Chief Minister Biju Patnaik, describing his contribution to Indonesia’s freedom struggle as a remarkable chapter in the shared history of both nations.

Recalling events from the late 1940s, Modi said India firmly supported Indonesia’s independence movement and stood with the country during its fight against colonial rule. He noted that the friendship between the two nations was built on mutual trust and shared democratic values.

The Prime Minister praised Biju Patnaik for his extraordinary courage during a critical period of Indonesia’s struggle for independence. As an Indian pilot, Patnaik played a key role in safely evacuating Indonesian leaders Sutan Sjahrir and Mohammad Hatta despite significant risks and challenging circumstances.

Modi said Biju Patnaik’s bravery strengthened relations between India and Indonesia and remains an enduring symbol of friendship. His contribution continues to be remembered with respect in Indonesia, where he was later honored for his role in supporting the country’s freedom movement.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto also discussed expanding cooperation in several sectors, including defence, technology, healthcare, maritime security, education, digital connectivity and critical minerals. Both leaders expressed confidence that the growing partnership would open a new chapter in bilateral relations.

The Prime Minister said India and Indonesia are committed to deepening their strategic partnership and working together for regional stability, economic development and global progress.
