Legendary Mountaineer Nirmal Purja Dies in Broad Peak Avalanche Tragedy

The international mountaineering community is mourning the loss of celebrated climber Nirmal Purja, who died in an avalanche while attempting Broad Peak in Pakistan administered Kashmir. The tragic incident claimed the lives of several members of the expedition, according to an official statement from his expedition company, Elite Exped.

The avalanche struck the western route of Broad Peak, one of the world’s highest mountains, located in the Karakoram range near the border of Pakistan administered Kashmir and China’s Xinjiang region. Rescue efforts were launched after Purja and several climbers were reported missing, but the search later confirmed their deaths.

Elite Exped expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, describing Purja as an exceptional leader whose courage, determination and humility inspired millions around the world. The company also confirmed that experienced climbing guides Poor Bahadur Gurung, known as Yukta, and Nima Sherpa were among those who lost their lives in the disaster.

Before becoming one of the world’s most respected mountaineers, Purja served in the British Army’s Brigade of Gurkhas and later joined the elite Special Boat Service. His military background helped shape the resilience and discipline that became hallmarks of his climbing career.

Purja earned worldwide recognition in 2019 through his groundbreaking Project Possible challenge, during which he climbed all 14 mountains above 8000 metres in just six months and six days. The achievement shattered previous records and redefined what many believed was physically possible in high altitude mountaineering.

He added another milestone to his remarkable career in 2021 when he was part of the first all Nepali team to successfully summit K2 during winter, a feat long regarded as one of mountaineering’s greatest challenges.

Purja’s extraordinary journey reached an even wider audience through the documentary 14 Peaks Nothing Is Impossible, which showcased his record breaking achievements and inspired countless people to pursue ambitious goals with determination and confidence.
