Jonnagiri Gold Project: Andhra Pradesh Set to Host India’s Largest Private Gold Mining Project

Jonnagiri Gold Project: Andhra Pradesh is emerging as a significant player in India’s gold production sector with the launch of a large scale private gold mining project in Kurnool district. The development marks a major milestone for the country’s mining industry and is expected to contribute substantially to domestic gold output in the coming years.

The project is located at Jonnagiri village, where extensive gold reserves have been identified and extraction activities have officially commenced. Industry experts believe the venture could become the largest private sector gold mining project established in India since Independence.

Geo Mysore Services India Private Limited is developing the project with an investment exceeding Rs 400 crore. Mining operations are being carried out through the open pit method across nearly 598 hectares of land. Estimates indicate that the Jonnagiri region alone may contain around 50 tonnes of gold reserves.

Once production reaches full capacity, officials expect the mine to generate nearly one tonne of refined gold annually over the next fifteen years. Such output could provide a meaningful contribution to India’s domestic gold supply at a time when national demand continues to remain significantly higher than local production.

India currently consumes more than 800 tonnes of gold every year, while domestic production remains limited. The Hutti mines in Karnataka produce only a small quantity annually, and the historic Kolar Gold Fields ceased operations years ago. Against this backdrop, the Jonnagiri project is being viewed as an important step toward strengthening the country’s mining capabilities.

Advanced technology will be used during extraction and processing operations. Officials say approximately one gram of gold can be recovered from every tonne of raw ore processed at the site, highlighting the scale and sophistication of the project.

Apart from Jonnagiri, gold bearing zones have also been identified in Ramagiri, Jonnagiri region extensions, Javvakula, and Chigurukunta Bisanatham areas. Authorities believe these discoveries could further expand India’s mineral resource base in the future.

The broader objective behind such projects is to reduce dependence on gold imports while encouraging self reliance in the mineral sector. With large reserves and long term production potential, the Andhra Pradesh project is expected to play an important role in achieving that goal.
