Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei because of prior foreign commitments while India will be represented by two senior officials.
India Names Delegation for Khamenei Funeral: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend the funeral ceremonies of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, despite receiving an official invitation from the Iranian government. India will instead be represented by Bihar Governor Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had formally invited Modi to attend the state funeral. However, the Prime Minister is unable to travel because his previously scheduled visits to Indonesia, New Zealand, and Australia overlap with the ceremony. Officials said these international engagements had been finalized well in advance.
Khamenei was killed on February 28 in an airstrike carried out by the United States and Israel. Although Iran initially planned to hold the funeral in March, the ceremonies were postponed because of regional security concerns and ongoing tensions.
The public will be allowed to pay their final respects on July 4 at the Grand Mosalla complex in Tehran. The final funeral rites are scheduled for July 9 at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, Khamenei’s hometown, where several international leaders and official delegations are expected to attend.
