India Japan Sign 120 Agreements with Major Push for AI Defence and Investment

India and Japan Deepen Strategic Partnership

India and Japan have taken their long standing partnership to a new level after signing more than 120 agreements during the 16th Annual India Japan Summit held at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi led the high level talks, focusing on technology, defence, clean energy and economic cooperation.

Making her first official visit to India as Japan’s first woman Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi received a traditional welcome from Prime Minister Modi. He described the growing partnership between the two nations as a major step toward shaping the future of global technology and strategic cooperation.

Investment Worth 10 Billion Dollars Expected

The agreements are expected to attract nearly 10 billion dollars in fresh Japanese investment into India. Leaders from both countries said the new financial cooperation framework will make cross border investments easier and encourage stronger business ties.

Japan also plans to increase its long term investment in India, with a target of attracting around 10 trillion yen over the coming years. Both governments aim to double the number of Japanese companies operating in India during the next decade, creating new opportunities for industry, manufacturing and employment.

AI and Advanced Technology Receive Major Boost

Artificial intelligence emerged as one of the key highlights of the summit. India and Japan released a joint declaration to expand cooperation in AI research, innovation and digital technology.

Prime Minister Modi said India’s software expertise combined with Japan’s precision manufacturing could create world changing innovations. Both leaders agreed that technology collaboration will remain a central pillar of their future partnership.

The discussions also covered batteries, green hydrogen and nuclear energy, with both countries committing to work together on clean energy solutions that support global sustainability goals.

Defence Partnership Enters a New Era

A landmark defence agreement was also announced during the summit. For the first time, India and Japan agreed to jointly develop advanced defence technology for the Indian Navy.

The project will focus on developing the state of the art Unicorn radio antenna system, marking a significant milestone in defence cooperation between the two countries. Prime Minister Modi said the initiative would open a new chapter in strategic defence collaboration and strengthen security cooperation.

Focus on Energy Security and Rural Development

Energy security was another important area of discussion. The two countries agreed on several initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable energy production.

One of the major announcements was the India Japan biogas initiative, which will support the establishment of 1,000 biogas and organic fertiliser plants across India. According to Prime Minister Modi, the project will strengthen the Gobardhan initiative while improving rural livelihoods, boosting sustainability and supporting cleaner energy production in villages.

Partnership Beyond Trade

Both leaders stressed that the new agreements go far beyond increasing trade and investment. The expanded partnership covers economic security, defence, artificial intelligence and energy cooperation, reflecting a shared vision for a stronger and more balanced Indo Pacific region.

With both nations among the world’s leading economies, the summit highlighted their commitment to building a future driven by innovation, resilience and long term strategic cooperation.
