Former AAP Councillor Tahir Hussain Sentenced to Life in IB Officer Ankit Sharma Murder Case

A Delhi court has sentenced former Aam Aadmi Party councillor Tahir Hussain to life imprisonment for the murder of Intelligence Bureau officer Ankit Sharma during the communal violence that erupted in northeast Delhi in February 2020. The judgment brings a significant legal conclusion to one of the most high profile cases linked to the riots.

Delivering the sentence, the Karkardooma Court observed that the crime reflected extreme brutality. The court noted that the violence did not end with the killing. It stated that Sharma’s body was dragged to a nearby drain and abandoned there, describing the act as evidence of continuing hatred even after his death. The court remarked that the nature of the offence placed it among the rarest and most shocking crimes.

Ankit Sharma, who was 26 years old, served as a security assistant with the Intelligence Bureau. According to the prosecution, he became a victim of mob violence during the clashes that swept through northeast Delhi in late February 2020. He was allegedly pulled away by a violent crowd and attacked with knives, rods, sticks and stones before being killed.

Investigators later recovered Sharma’s body from a nearby drain the following day. The post mortem examination revealed 51 stab injuries, highlighting the severity of the assault. The findings became a crucial part of the prosecution’s case during the trial.

The court carefully examined the evidence presented throughout the proceedings before holding Tahir Hussain guilty in connection with the murder. After considering the circumstances of the offence and the manner in which it was carried out, the court concluded that a life sentence was appropriate.

The case attracted nationwide attention because it involved the killing of a government intelligence officer during one of the most violent episodes witnessed in the national capital in recent years. The verdict is expected to remain a significant reference point in the legal proceedings arising from the 2020 Delhi riots.

The judgment also underlined that acts of mob violence resulting in such brutal crimes cannot be treated lightly. By imposing life imprisonment, the court stressed the importance of accountability and the rule of law in cases involving serious offences committed during communal unrest.
