Azamgarh Crime: A violent incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district ended with the death of a man accused of killing his wife and two religious figures before locking himself inside a room with his three children.

The incident began on Tuesday evening when Arvind Singh returned home from work and found his wife, Babita Singh, 32, conducting a religious ritual in the presence of two religious figures, according to police.

Police said an argument broke out after Arvind questioned what was happening inside the house. He reportedly demanded that the two religious figures show their Aadhaar cards. The disagreement soon escalated, and Arvind allegedly opened fire with his licensed firearm.

His wife and the two religious figures were killed in the shooting, police said.

After the killings, Arvind reportedly took his three children into a room and locked the door from inside. He then threatened to kill the children if anyone attempted to enter the house.

Police reached the location after receiving information from local residents and surrounded the house. Officers spent several hours trying to persuade Arvind to surrender while also working to ensure the children were brought out safely.

The standoff continued for nearly seven hours. Police teams remained outside the house and attempted to negotiate with the accused, who continued to threaten the lives of the children.

The situation turned critical in the early hours of Wednesday when police attempted to enter the room. According to officials, Arvind opened fire at the police, prompting the officers to respond.

An exchange of gunfire followed, during which Arvind was fatally shot. One of the children suffered serious injuries during the incident and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police said the other two children were safe.

Investigators are examining what led to the sudden escalation inside the house. Initial findings suggest that Babita had been conducting religious rituals at home for several days as part of practices intended to ward off what the family believed were supernatural influences.
