Assam Flood Emergency Worsens as Death Toll Reaches 41

Assam is facing a severe flood emergency as continuous monsoon rainfall has pushed rivers beyond danger levels, affecting more than seven lakh people across 16 districts. Officials said the death toll has climbed to 41 after additional fatalities were reported during the past day.

Rescue agencies, including the Army, National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force, have intensified operations across the affected regions. More than 700 people have been rescued from flooded villages as emergency teams continue searching for those reported missing.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the disaster as one of the most serious flood situations witnessed in eastern Assam in nearly six decades. According to the state government, exceptionally heavy rainfall combined with weather conditions in upstream areas has significantly worsened the flooding.

Large parts of Sivasagar, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Golaghat and several other districts remain underwater. Flooded roads, damaged farmland and disrupted public infrastructure have forced thousands of families to leave their homes and seek safer shelter.

To support displaced residents, the government has established 148 relief camps where nearly 30,000 people are staying. In locations cut off by floodwaters, authorities are using drones to deliver food packets, medicines and other essential supplies.

District administrations have also issued fresh flood alerts for people living near riverbanks, warning them about rising water levels. Residents have been advised to avoid travelling through submerged roads, stay away from electrical installations and shift livestock, valuables and important documents to safer places.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted more rainfall over the coming days, raising concerns that the flood situation could deteriorate further if water levels continue to rise.
