Telangana QR HIV Risk Check: Telangana Plans QR Code System for HIV Risk Assessment

Telangana is preparing a QR code based initiative to help people privately assess their HIV risk and find nearby testing centres without immediately visiting a hospital or speaking to staff.

Telangana QR HIV Risk Check: Telangana is planning a new digital approach to HIV awareness and testing, with QR codes expected to be placed in locations where large numbers of people regularly gather.

The initiative, being taken up through the Telangana State AIDS Control Society, is aimed particularly at making HIV information and testing services easier to access for young people. QR codes are expected to be displayed at colleges, IT hubs, hospitals, offices, railway stations, bus stations, malls and other public locations.

People who scan the code using their mobile phones will be asked a set of basic questions. Based on their responses, the system will provide a private assessment of their potential HIV risk and guide them on whether they should consider getting tested.

The idea is to make the first step less uncomfortable for people who may hesitate to visit a hospital or discuss their concerns directly with a health worker. Officials believe the private nature of the assessment could encourage more people, especially young adults, to seek testing when required.

K Vidyasagar, Project Director of the Telangana State AIDS Control Society, said the programme is intended to improve awareness and encourage people who may be at risk to voluntarily undergo HIV testing.

The QR code system will also help users identify nearby testing facilities. After completing the assessment, details of the nearest Anti Retroviral Therapy centre or relevant testing centre are expected to be displayed on the user’s phone.

The state is also planning to expand awareness activities around HIV, AIDS and syphilis. Officials are looking at greater participation from students, corporate employees and other groups, while also seeking support from major corporate organisations.

Telangana currently has 127 Integrated Counselling and Testing Centres, 11 mobile ICTCs and 22 ART centres. Another 11 ART centres are operating through public private partnerships.

Officials hope the QR based system will make the process from awareness and risk assessment to testing, counselling and treatment easier to navigate. The broader goal is to encourage early testing and strengthen efforts to control the spread of HIV.
