Telangana Tops Exam Stress: Telangana Reports Highest Student Exam Stress Calls Says Supreme Court Task Force

A Supreme Court appointed task force found Telangana recorded the highest number of student exam stress calls in 2024, highlighting growing concerns over mental health and academic pressure.

Telangana Tops Exam Stress: Telangana has emerged as the state with the highest number of students seeking help for exam related stress, according to the interim report submitted by the National Task Force appointed by the Supreme Court. The findings have raised fresh concerns over the growing impact of academic pressure on students’ mental well being.

The report states that more than one lakh students from Telangana contacted the Health Department’s Tele MANAS toll free mental health helpline during 2024. Across India, around 3.6 lakh students reached out to the service, with Telangana accounting for the largest share of calls. Many students reportedly sought support for anxiety, fear, and stress linked to examinations.

The task force was constituted to study student mental health and recommend measures to prevent suicides in educational institutions. The latest findings underline the increasing need for counselling services, early intervention, and stronger mental health support systems for students.

The report also highlighted the alarming number of student suicides recorded this year. By August 2025, 210 students had reportedly died by suicide across the country. The figures included 117 male students and 93 female students.

Among the reported cases, 82 students were from government colleges, 79 from private institutions, and 49 from other educational establishments. The report further noted that several cases involved students from premier institutions, including medical colleges and engineering institutes. Medical students accounted for a significant number of the deaths, reinforcing concerns about the intense academic pressure faced in professional courses.

The task force stressed the importance of strengthening mental health awareness, expanding counselling services, and creating a supportive educational environment to help students cope with academic challenges before they reach a crisis point.
