England batter Joe Root has matched Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 68 Test half centuries, reaching the landmark during the first Test against Pakistan.

Joe Root Equals Sachin’s Test Record: Joe Root has added another impressive milestone to his Test career by matching Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most half centuries in the format.

The England star reached the landmark during the first Test against Pakistan at Headingley. Root scored 66 runs from 112 deliveries in the first innings, bringing up his 68th Test fifty before his innings came to an end.

For years, Tendulkar’s 68 half centuries stood as one of the notable batting records in Test cricket. Root has now drawn level with the Indian legend, giving him an opportunity to take sole possession of the record with his next fifty.

Root’s achievement becomes even more significant when compared with several other Test greats. West Indies legend Shivnarine Chanderpaul has 66 half centuries, while former India captain Rahul Dravid and Australia’s Allan Border finished their Test careers with 63 fifties each. Ricky Ponting recorded 62, while Jacques Kallis had 58.

The England batter has built his reputation through remarkable consistency in Test cricket. He has repeatedly turned starts into big scores and has remained one of England’s most dependable run scorers across different conditions.

Root is also within touching distance of another record associated with Tendulkar. The Indian batting great finished his Test career with 15,921 runs, the highest in the history of the format. Root continues to move up that list and is widely regarded as the modern batter with the strongest chance of challenging the record.

His record against several major Test nations has also contributed heavily to his overall tally. Root has scored more than 3,000 Test runs against India and has also produced substantial numbers against Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan and the West Indies.

At Headingley, however, the immediate achievement was about the 68th fifty. Root has now joined Tendulkar at the top of the Test half century chart. One more fifty would give him the record outright and add yet another major achievement to an already remarkable Test career.
