Sensex and Nifty Open Lower as Crude Oil Rally Pressures Markets
Indian equity benchmarks began Thursday on a weaker note as rising crude oil prices and global geopolitical uncertainty weighed on investor confidence across financial markets.

Indian stock markets opened in negative territory on Thursday, with both the Sensex and the Nifty registering early losses as investors reacted to a sharp increase in international crude oil prices.
The benchmark BSE Sensex dropped more than 230 points during opening trade, while the NSE Nifty also moved lower as selling pressure emerged across several heavyweight stocks. Banking, information technology and financial shares were among the major contributors to the decline.
Market participants remained cautious after Brent crude prices climbed above the USD 96 per barrel mark. Analysts said higher energy prices could increase inflationary pressure and affect corporate profitability, leading investors to adopt a defensive approach.
According to market experts, uncertainty surrounding developments in West Asia has strengthened concerns over global crude oil supplies. The geopolitical situation has added fresh volatility to financial markets, influencing investor sentiment worldwide.
Exchange data also showed that Foreign Institutional Investors turned net sellers in the previous trading session, adding further pressure on domestic equities after offloading shares worth several hundred crore rupees.
Among Asian markets, South Korea and Japan traded with gains during the session, while Chinese markets witnessed weakness. Meanwhile, United States equities had ended the previous session in negative territory, reflecting broader global caution.
The previous trading day had already seen significant losses in Indian equities, and Thursday’s weak opening indicated that investors continue to monitor global developments, oil prices and foreign investment trends before taking fresh positions.
