AI Could Make Entry Level Jobs Harder for Young Graduates
A new Stanford study suggests AI is affecting entry level employment more heavily, raising concerns for young graduates who are preparing to enter the workforce for the first time.

Artificial intelligence is changing the workplace at a rapid pace, but the effect may not be the same for every worker. New research from Stanford University suggests that young employees at the beginning of their careers are facing a growing employment challenge in jobs most exposed to AI.
The findings are particularly significant for recent college graduates. For many of them, an entry level position is the first step into the professional world. As companies introduce more AI based tools, some of the routine tasks traditionally assigned to new employees can increasingly be handled by technology.
Young Workers See a Bigger Impact
The latest findings are part of a research paper titled Canaries in the Coal Mine? Six Facts About the AI and Employment Impact. The August 2026 version updates earlier research with newer employment data and revised analysis.
According to the study, employment among workers aged 22 to 25 has fallen by 19 percent in occupations considered highly exposed to AI, compared with jobs where AI has had a smaller impact. The figure was reported at 13 percent in the previous version of the research, indicating that the trend has become more pronounced.
The difference between younger and more experienced workers is one of the key concerns raised by the research. Senior professionals often bring years of experience, specialised knowledge and established workplace connections, which can make their roles harder to replace entirely.
Why Entry Level Roles Are Vulnerable
Entry level positions often involve repetitive tasks, basic analysis, administrative work and other responsibilities that can now be supported or automated by AI systems. These roles have traditionally allowed fresh graduates to gain practical experience before moving into more specialised positions.
As businesses adopt AI to improve productivity and reduce costs, the number of opportunities available for workers to gain that initial experience could come under pressure.
The research does not suggest that AI will eliminate every job held by young workers. Instead, it points to a changing employment environment where the traditional route from college to a first job may become more competitive.
What This Means for Fresh Graduates
For students preparing to graduate, the changing job market could make practical skills increasingly important. Understanding AI tools alongside communication, problem solving and industry specific knowledge may help young candidates stand out as employers rethink the roles they need.
The bigger question is how companies will balance automation with the need to train the next generation of workers. If fewer entry level opportunities are available, young professionals could have a harder time getting the experience needed to build long term careers.
The Stanford findings therefore add another dimension to the wider debate over AI and employment. The technology may improve productivity, but its growing presence could also reshape how young people get their first opportunity in the workforce.
