The accident happened around 2 a.m. after heavy rain hit the city. The waste pile gave way and crashed onto makeshift homes located close to the dumping site, leaving residents trapped under the debris.
Six others were seriously injured in the incident and were taken for medical treatment. Rescue teams moved into the area soon after the collapse and began searching through the wreckage for survivors.
The disaster came as authorities were already preparing to shut down the landfill. Officials had reportedly issued notices asking people living around the site to leave the area because of the risks associated with the unstable waste pile.
Some residents had already moved out, while others were still making arrangements to leave. The collapse occurred before everyone could relocate, turning the situation into a major tragedy.
Emergency workers continued their search in the affected area as concerns remained that more people could still be trapped beneath the waste. Authorities are expected to assess the condition of the landfill and the surrounding settlements following the accident.
