The Indian pair faced China’s Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning in the semifinal on Saturday. Despite taking the opening game, Treesa and Gayatri eventually went down 21-18, 13-21, 8-21.
India started strongly and managed to stay composed during the crucial stages of the first game. A series of important points helped the Indian pair close it out 21-18.
The second game remained closely contested in the early stages, with the score level at 12-12. China then stepped up the pressure, winning several consecutive points to take the game 21-13 and force a decider.
The third game proved difficult for the Indian duo. Liu and Tan controlled the rallies from the start and quickly built a comfortable advantage. They eventually finished the game 21-8 to book their place in the final.
Despite the semifinal defeat, the bronze marks an important achievement for Indian badminton. India had last won a women’s doubles medal at the World Championships in 2011, when Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa claimed bronze.
Treesa and Gayatri have now ended a long wait for India in the event and added another significant medal to the country’s badminton record.
