Karnataka Bans Analogue Paneer: Karnataka Bans Analogue Paneer Sales for One Year

Karnataka has imposed a one year ban on analogue paneer sales, citing consumer protection concerns and plans for statewide inspections to prevent misleading product sales.

Karnataka Bans Analogue Paneer: Karnataka has introduced a one year ban on the sale of analogue paneer, with the restriction set to remain in force until August 17, 2027. The state food safety authorities said the move is intended to protect consumers from being misled about the products they purchase.

The decision follows inspections carried out at several shops across the state, where officials collected paneer samples for testing. Authorities are concerned that analogue products could be sold as regular paneer without consumers being properly informed about their ingredients.

Unlike traditional paneer, analogue paneer does not rely entirely on milk as its primary ingredient. It can contain vegetable oils such as palm oil along with starch and milk powder. Because these ingredients are generally cheaper, analogue paneer can be sold at a significantly lower price than conventional dairy paneer.

The products may look similar to genuine paneer, making it difficult for some customers to distinguish between them without checking the label or product information. Officials have therefore advised consumers to read packaging details carefully and verify that the product they purchase is made from milk.

The state food safety department said enforcement teams will conduct inspections across Karnataka to ensure the ban is followed. Businesses found violating the restrictions could face action under applicable food safety laws.

Karnataka’s decision comes after Maharashtra also moved against the manufacture and sale of analogue or non dairy paneer. The growing regulatory focus has brought greater attention to how alternative paneer products are labelled and marketed to consumers.
