Tarapith Hotel Fire in West Bengal: A deadly fire broke out at a four storey hotel in Tarapith, Birbhum district, West Bengal, early Monday morning, leaving seven people dead and several others injured.

The fire reportedly started on the ground floor at around 4 am. Preliminary information suggests that a technical problem involving an AC unit may have triggered the blaze. The flames quickly spread, filling the lower part of the building with thick smoke.

Local residents alerted the police and fire department after noticing the fire. Firefighters reached the spot and began rescue operations with the help of people nearby. After bringing the flames under control, the teams recovered the victims and shifted the injured to the Rampurhat government hospital.

Several guests reportedly struggled to find a way out as smoke spread through the hotel. A woman from Kolkata who was staying at the hotel said the building became heavily filled with smoke, making it difficult for people to escape. Some guests also experienced breathing problems.

The victims are believed to have been devotees who had travelled to Tarapith to visit the well known Kali temple. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the death toll could rise as rescue and verification work continues.

Police have registered a case and started an investigation into the incident. Initial findings reportedly point to a lack of basic fire safety arrangements at the hotel. Officials also said the fire alarm was not functioning, raising questions about the safety measures in place at the building.

Authorities are now examining the circumstances that led to the fire and whether safety regulations were followed. Further action will be taken against those found responsible, officials said.
